Shalom has also been involved in micro housing through various scheme. Shalom Micro Housing Project was initiated in 2001 with the dedication of the first 5 houses. In an emerging economy like India, micro housing definitely serves a social purpose. Shelter always gives a peace of mind and that is something worth celebrating. People who are below poverty line never see their dreams of owning a home fulfilled in their lifetime. In this context Shalom has introduced different schemes to make the impossible really happen. ===============================================================
Attention on poverty housing has been the major thrust area of Shalom’s intervention since 2001. Palakkad being one of the most backward districts in the state the need of housing is so higher and severe. It is commendable that the major nationalized and scheduled banks have taken the initiatives to provide housing loans to the SHG members. This has been a positive indicator and given hope of ray in the rural shelterless people.
Under housing micro finance, Shalom extended its support to "renovate the dilapidated houses" to complete construction "building in stages" and to "build new houses."
Eradication of poverty housing has been the major thrust area of the Trust. 56% of the members of the SHGs in the Palakkad town and 23% of the members of the group in the rural villages of Palakkad are without decent shelter, nor a piece of land to construct a house of their own. Having recognized the grave situation, Shalom has formed Save & Build Group, each group having 15 - 20 members. The members of Save & Build Group save money for purchase of land and construction of houses.
